A Chickadee House May 2007 Pierson built a birdhouse from a kit he received as a Christmas gift 2 years ago. He built it and painted it and we hung it in the tree outside our kitchen window. No birds ever even seemed interested. A few weeks ago I witnessed 'bird porn' in the form of two chickadees mating. They were mating in the branches of our flowering pear tree just outside my office window. I told Peter and Pierson how strange it was and how much it made me feel like a voyeur. Today I was outside planting our herbs and watering the flower garden and I heard a great bird flurry as I stood next to our flowering pear tree. I looked up into the branches and saw absolutely nothing but then I realized the noise was shoulder-level. Two little yellow beaks were squeaking and peeking out of Pierson's birdhouse, now a chickadee home. We knew it was a chickadee home because of the two attentive and concerned parents flittering about in the tree above our heads. We took a closer look and then went in our house to let the parents feed their very hungry babies. It appeared that there may be more than two chickadee babies inside but it is hard to tell without taking a closer look. Of course, we would not risk a closer look for fear of scaring off the chickadee parents. So, Pierson built a chickadee home which now houses chickadee babies. That is a really wonderful Spring surprise this year!
