Why Women Should Buy Jewelry for Themselves                September 2007

I have noticed that for most women, jewelry is an extremely sentimental item.  It reminds them of the times they received the jewelry, special trips, events and moments.  I think if more women bought jewelry for themselves on a regular basis, they would have a wardrobe of jewelry to wear to feel secure, special and empowered no matter what happened with their romantic relationships.  The problem occurs when the relationship with the man who gave them the jewelry goes sour.  Many newly-divorced\soon-to-be-divorced women come to us to sell their wedding rings (and other marital jewelry gifts) and we are always fair in our offer for their pieces.  A lot of jewelers are not fair in their offers and take advantage of the fragile state the women are in by offering far less than they normally would for the pieces.

More women should consider buying jewelry for themselves because it is a gift affirming their independence and unique taste.  Jewelry is like a coat of arms, a way to identify yourself, your art, your dreams and standards.  Why wait and hope and hint for someone else to buy this precious gift for you?

I buy myself not only jewelry, but loose gemstones.  In fact, most of my self-purchased jewelry starts as a loose gemstone purchase that evolves into a piece of jewelry after some time.  I feel a bit guilty spending a large amount of money on myself at one time.  But if I spread it out over months or years, buying a major gemstone, then a few diamonds, then the mounting....well I just don't feel guilty about it at that point.  And I have thoroughly enjoyed every single piece that I have put together for myself.  They are a small selfish moment, something in my life that is all about me.  That has become more important to me as so much of my time is devoted to Pierson, Peter, family and the shop.

So many women spend so much time sacrificing for the good of their family, husband and children, I think a small piece of artistic beauty in the form of jewelry is well-deserved.  And if I ever have a bit of residual guilt about my fine  jewelry, I just remind myself that jewelry is an ever-appreciating asset that will go to Pierson eventually anyway, so it is a good investment too.
