I'm at a Hibatichi Grill eating grilled squash and baby eggplant that has been caramelized by flame. There is a Japanese man in front of me eating a fast food hamburger. I'm shocked by the diet of this man who should be eating healthier. To my left there is a younger Japanese woman who also is eating the eggplant dish with an older Japanese woman. the younger woman and I both run out of eggplant on our plates at the same time. I get up to get the  freshly cooked dish of eggplant sitting on the far side of the table. Before I sit down I offer some to the younger woman, who tries to get some off of the plate using her chop sticks but she can not because she doesn't know how to use them. She seems embarrassed but keeps trying anyway, after too many failed attempts I help her, and she nods in a polite bowing  gesture.

I am worried at this point that western civilization has made too much of an impression on a culture I admire.
