My grandfather and dad built a beautiful house on Diamond head in Honolulu. The house was built like a bunker, capable of dealing with most catastrophes the world could throw at it. I spent a few years living in it and always marveled at how well it was built. In my dream the house was intact, except for the door I used to travel in and out of most of the time. There was a stair case that had shifted away from the foundation so far that it was a dangerous situation, and making it impossible to enter and leave from that door. My grandfather is dead, but in my dream he took up a misty corner of presence, where his wife Keiko spoke for him. She said he tried to fix it but it was too difficult to do on his own. The symbolic nature of dreams can sometimes be very direct. My father is the result of my grandfathers first marriage. His second marriage to Keiko produced two kids, Maile and Michael. After Joe died it seemed that they severed relations with my dad. He and his sister were excluded from the will, and no effort has been made to try and keep the family with a bunch of branches intact. This staircase that I wanted to fix on my own was too heavy for one person to lift. It would take a village of people. To fix the family, I think would take the will of all of us. I know nothing that man make lasts forever, and ashes to ashes and all that, but I'm tired of watching things dissolve around be because we're too busy fighting for the scraps of what is left behind. Scraps in tough times have been used to make entire quilts if they are all used together, and during the winter months a quilt can warm and comfort, but a scrap is just a small piece of cloth. |
