I'm in an outrigger canoe with my dad. The only difference is that I'm steering instead of my dad (who has paddled in the last seat, or steersman set, my whole life.) We got in the boat right before silver stairs, in between the stairs and the Elks Club. I could see the hexagonal pilings that protruded from the sea wall, and marked the boundary of Outrigger Canoe Club's beach. The pilings were only covered every now and then by the wash of the waves. All I wanted to do was to get as close to the pilings as possible maybe even try to pass over them using the wash of the waves and as if my father was reading my mind he said to me in a joking way the he thought I was going to try and get as close as possible to the concrete just to scare him. I did not pass over the barriers but cut as close to the outside edge as I could. This reminded me of racing outriggers and turning a six man canoe 180 degrees around the flag. I watched the rectangular "Amas" pass within inches of the pilings and thought to myself that had it been a race it would have been a perfect turn. As soon as I passed the pilings, and headed towards the beach, the boat picked up speed, because to my dad it always was tradition to show off in front of everyone at the club. I tried at this point to steer the boat by "poking" the paddle but we were going so fast that the paddle skidded off of the side of the boat and headed outwards causing drag. My last thought was that I had screwed the velocity of the boat by doing so and tried to pry the paddle once more against the side, but was not successful. Still trying to fill the old mans shoes, but not doing very well at it in the end. |
