Silver stairs. They connect the land to the ocean, and they are real. When Silver Stairs is at best is when the south shore of Oahu breaks just right. The swell has to push through a complex reef maze just right without losing energy and bounce off of the sea wall. This creates a wave that breaks going out to sea. The lore of silver stairs is that once it broke so hard you could catch the wave most of the way to Shipwrecks, another great place to surf. I'm sure this never happened, but there were days that you could get a ride out to sea on a wave for a moderate distance. This general area is where my dad and I would come to catch waves in a canoe. He would get us on a wave that would always take us right up to the wall, and for years I always thought we would hit it, but he always pulled off just in time. This always scared the crap out of me, but I always had the most fun here in the canoe with my dad. Silver stairs represents to me a magical place where the ocean was almost never out of control and did things that it normally didn't do. A wave that finds its' way to land but changes its' mind and heads back to sea.
