"What's new?" they ask.  So instead of rattling through the inventory list of things I've made in the last week, a list that usually glazes over most of those not completely obsessed with jewelry with a look of a calm pond, I tell them  I have a new mill. "Yea, I have an eight axis mill with digital readout in metric that is accurate to 1/100th of a millimeter." "Uhhhhh.....bet that makes good beer." one guy at the climbing gym told me when he heard of my new toy.

This mill, if I wanted, can be hooked up to a computer an create a piece of complex proportions and detail with a near perfect quality, but I'm not hooking it up to the computer, unless it can make beer.

I believe in a philosophy that when you allow a machine to do Mans work you take the man away from the man. (Star Trek-Insurrection)

"What? but I want my piece to be perfect! and your computer would make it so" some say.  I believe those who think the push of a button an the whirring of gears will make perfection are the same people who do not look carefully enough at themselves, and also the first to be killed by the Terminator when it comes from the future.

I will not give may hands up to the machine, I will make my hands control the machine, and to create the beauty that hopefully reflects the a look that thousands before me, who called themselves jewelry craftsman, have done. Long live the graver pushed by hand to create a beautiful imperfect piece of art.

Those who seek to improve the art of jewelry by creating a machine to do the work for them, obviously do not have talent within themselves to do the job....

Please read  "one week later."
