My mom left the store to live in Colorado, and left me to run the place. Colorado was fun for her, and I liked that, because it allowed me to create without having a constant critic or a motherly "that's nice" comment. I hammered gold into oblivion, forged metals, and learned to set gemstones under the apprentice of Robert Wooding. My goal at Engle and Morgan was to refine my butterfly, and carve out a line of jewelry with my name on it. The rainforest line was my first. Frogs, leaves, and flowers were the theme. I carved the waxes and had them made, but the finish was never correct because the polishers who polished my pieces would remove petals, toes of frogs and leave bumps where bumps shouldn't be. Porosity plagued the pieces cast by my mothers favorite caster, as a result the metal wore at a faster rate. and fine detail of the leaves bent. So.... I you want something done right, study it for about 14 years then do it yourself. So my study became what I found in the back room. What I found was a bench with a torch, a flex shaft with some bits and a polishing wheel. Good start. Back to Some of these stories are extremely personal or |
