The days of fall are my favorite time in the Ohio Valley. They've kept me here for over 14 years, and every year that September, and October roll around I say to myself that life is good. It's good because the weather is always perfect, Courtney is in the shop more hours because Pierson is in school, and Christmas is right around the corner. To take advantage of this perfect time in Ohio I've found some time in my day that could be used better, the commute to work. Instead of driving my car I've gone back to a childhood love, my bike.

I've started to ride my bike to work because it gets me closer to this soft air of fall and the delicate calls of birds getting ready for the trials of winter. The ride is short, in fact the ride is faster than when I drive my car. There are some shortcuts that I can take that allow me time to reflect on what I need to do in the day, and it keeps me out of the traffic that is totally inconsiderate of bicycles. Some of the things that I do in my "me time" is sing a song in my head, calculate the geometry of a piece, think about my friends in distant places, look at trees, smell the air and so on. I can't do these things in my car. The radio sings the songs for me, the windows keep the sounds out, the smells of exhaust in traffic suck, and the drivers who tailgate me make me so mad that I can't think friendly thoughts like what I think of on my mountain bike away from the hustle bustle world of cars.

There are two things other than happy thoughts that have happened while on my bicycle. First, I've saved a bunch of money on gas, so much that I can buy a few extra coffees without even making a dent in my normal budget. Second, I can feel myself getting in better shape. I wish that more people in this city would ride to work, or to the store, and while I'm on the subject of activities I wish they would use the parks more, instead of going because of the scheduled games that their kids attend. I wish these things because I see all around me people who could be happier if they took better care of themselves, and a happier populace makes a better world.   A better world is just better all around. Peace.
